Topeka was settled in 1832 and was first called Hawpatch. The village was officially laid out in 1893 and became an incorporated town in 1913. Farming and industry helped Topeka grow, while the railroad brought new opportunities to the community. Today, Topeka continues to be a small, rural town with a strong agricultural and Amish heritage.
is a longtime part of Topeka’s farming community. The auction has been operating since 1933. In the 1970s, the auction became especially known for draft horse sales. The first draft horse sale was held in 1976, and the horse program grew from there. A horse arena and additional seating were later added to handle the growing crowds. Today, the auction continues to hold livestock and specialty horse sales, making it an important part of the agricultural community in Topeka and northern Indiana.
