History of Warsaw, Indiana

Warsaw was first settled in 1834 and officially platted in 1836. It was named after Warsaw, Poland, in honor of Polish hero Tadeusz Kościuszko, who also gave his name to Kosciusko County. Warsaw became the county seat in 1837. The arrival of the railroad in 1854 helped the town grow and brought more businesses and industries. In the late 1800s, Warsaw became known for its medical-device industry. In 1895, Revra DePuy started DePuy Manufacturing, which helped establish Warsaw as a major center for orthopedic products. Today, Warsaw is often called the “Orthopedic Capital of the World.”

The historic downtown still includes landmarks such as the Kosciusko County Courthouse and the old county jail, helping preserve Warsaw’s history.
