Syracuse, Indiana, is a charming lakeside community in Kosciusko County with a rich history shaped by its waterways, early settlers, railroads, and strong connection to Lake Wawasee and Syracuse Lake.
Syracuse began taking shape in the 1830s when early settlers established homes and businesses along Turkey Creek. In 1834, Samuel Crosson built a grist mill, helping establish the community and providing an important service to the growing area.
The town was officially laid out in 1837 and continued to grow throughout the 1800s. The arrival of the railroad in 1874 brought new opportunities for transportation, trade, and tourism, helping Syracuse become an important community in the region.
Over time, the area’s beautiful lakes became a major attraction. Lake Wawasee and Syracuse Lake helped establish Syracuse as a popular destination for boating, fishing, vacation homes, and summer recreation. That connection to the water remains an important part of the community’s character today.
